The argument posited by some Republicans that all gerrymandering is bad — and particularly when it is done by Democrats who claim to oppose it — has transformed the debate over redistricting. No longer just a fight over which neighborhoods are broken up by a new map, the fight over gerrymandering has become another chapter in the war between Democrats and Republicans over the need for reforms to America’s democracy.
Though college students have always been at a greater disadvantage in terms of abortion access, recent abortion bans have heightened existing worries about college students’ access to abortion.
“It infiltrates kids’ minds in a way that they have to carry around this really deep emotional weight,” said Gonzales. “They know that the people that have the power to do good are instead using the most vulnerable population to amplify their own political platform.”
The argument that Russians should just shrug their shoulders at the thought of Ukraine abandoning its long-standing ties to Russia and forming a closer military partnership with the United States is unrealistic.
The United States thus finds itself in a somewhat circular predicament. The protection of voting rights depends on a body that is elected under voting procedures that increasingly curtail the access of minorities to the political process and whose institutional barriers prevent the majority of the voters from having their will heard.
Come November, voters will have a choice between electing an ass-kicker who will fight for them or an ass-kisser who has sold them out to the special interests and billionaires who fund his campaign.
