Judge of Probate
The probate judge oversees the authentication of wills.
Democrat: Clifton Graves
Graves is a former lawyer whose license was suspended for nine years because he did not pay income taxes. Since then, he has directed Project Fresh Start, a New Haven-run program aimed to rehabilitate prisoners and has worked as a conservator for New Haven residents under former Probate Judge Jack Keyes, who is retiring this January. Republican: Melissa Papantones
Papantones is a lawyer in New Haven, currently working for Allstate Insurance. Her full bio can be found on her campaign website here.
Mayor
Democrat: Toni N. Harp
Harp is the incumbent and the winner of the Democratic primary (she won against petitioning candidate Marcus L Paca). Harp’s campaign is centered around continuing public safety and education improvement in the city as well as developing the New Haven downtown business district. Harp’s website can be found here.
Working Families Party: Sarah K Ganong
At 25, Ganong is the youngest candidate for Mayor of New Haven. She is the political director of the Working Families Party and has worked on previous New Haven campaigns and for Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid. While Ganong admits that her win is “highly unlikely,” her goal is to win one percent of the vote which would mean that the Working Families Party would get a municipal election ballot spot.
Petitioning: Marcus L Paca
After losing the Democratic primary, Paca is running as a petitioning candidate. Paca’s platform is aimed at increasing inclusiveness in New Haven government. Paca has previously served as the Labor Relations Director for New Haven and in community outreach and development organizations.
City Clerk
Democrat: Michael Smart (unopposed)
Smart is the incumbent and is running unopposed. In the community, he has worked to revitalize neighborhoods, increase park space, protect landmarks, and provide for zoning of residential areas.
