maia VPFor Vice President of the Yale College Council, The Politic enthusiastically endorses Maia Eliscovich-Sigal ’16.

After serving on the Council for one year, Eliscovich-Sigal has developed an ambitious vision appropriately tempered by realistic expectations. She would like the YCC Vice President to take a more active role so that decisions do not come “unilaterally from the president.” Aided by an impressive base of support from current YCC members, Eliscovich-Sigal has the respect necessary to make that happen.

We are pleased with Eliscovich-Sigal’s plans to reach out to student leaders on campus, as well as her sense of urgency. She rightfully understands, for example, that the Yale administration does not necessarily operate on the academic calendar, and that it is important to present proposals to the administration as early as possible.

Eliscovich-Sigal is running against Allison Kolberg ’16 and Chris Moates ’16. Kolberg aspires to be a “Cyrus Bean-type figure,” as she told The Politic — running a tight ship behind the scenes as the president sets the vision for the YCC. An inability to clearly articulate her own vision for the Council, though, weakens her candidacy. Moates brims with southern charm, but he cannot match Eliscovich-Sigal’s insight and experience. Moates also noted — worryingly, for an aspiring YCC official — that he has prioritized his varsity baseball commitments in the past, and will continue to do so in the future.

We are confident that Eliscovich-Sigal will be an effective voice for students and a consensus-builder on the YCC, acting as a conciliatory figure when competing interests arise. With full confidence in Eliscovich-Sigal, The Politic encourages you to vote for her.
